Waiting for the Lord

Iain Lackie - May 2007

Isaiah 40:31 but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

There are some things which I find it is incredibly difficult to do and one of them is waiting. When it comes to patience, I have to admit that I just donít have it. Had I been living through that period between Easter and Pentecost, between the Lordís rising and the coming of the Holy Spirit, I really would have struggled. I am not alone. As I read the Gospel stories, I believe I can detect some degree of impatience in the disciples as they try to take up their fishing again. But the waiting time wasnít wasted time as two lessons had to be learned.

The disciples could do nothing on their own They tried fishing but even that they couldnít do without the Lordís help. They knew that they couldnít make disciples without the help of the Holy Spirit and so they had to wait.

The disciples needed to know they were truly forgiven Why did Jesus appear to his disciples after the resurrection? Well, one reason was to assure them that though they had forsaken in his hour of greatest trial he would forgive them, even Peter who had so openly denied him.

Perhaps you are going through a period of waiting, a period when God seems to be asking you to be still. If this is the case, remember that as Isaiah pointed out, no waiting on the Lord is wasted. If we like the disciples learn that we are totally dependent on the working of God and that we really are forgiven our sins, we can be sure that we too will be filled with the Holy Spirit and we too will be used by God to proclaim his glory and his goodness. We too will mount up with wings like eagles. We too shall run and not be weary. We too shall walk and not faint.
